Every now and then, we’re asked about AKC Conformation and what it takes to show a dog. While the majority of our puppies are placed as beloved family companions, we know some owners are curious about the sport and want to learn more. This page is intended to serve as a starting point by providing reliable information and resources for those interested in exploring the world of AKC conformation.
Conformation is much more than a beauty contest. Dogs are evaluated against the official AKC breed standard to determine how closely they represent the ideal Miniature Longhaired Dachshund in structure, movement, temperament, and overall breed type. The purpose of conformation is to evaluate breeding stock and help preserve the future of the breed.
Many people are surprised to learn that you don’t have to be a professional handler to show your dog. Owner-handlers make up a large portion of the sport, and many dogs earn championships with their owners on the other end of the lead.
Getting Started
One of the best ways to learn is by attending a local AKC conformation show. Spend time watching the different breeds, observing how exhibitors present their dogs, and becoming familiar with how the ring operates. Keep in mind that exhibitors are often busy preparing to compete, so don’t be discouraged if someone isn’t able to answer questions at that moment. If you’re genuinely interested in learning, you’ll eventually find people who are generous with their knowledge and willing to help.
Another great place to start is your local all-breed kennel club. Many clubs offer weekly conformation handling classes where both you and your dog can practice stacking, gaiting, and ring procedures in a relaxed learning environment.
Finding a knowledgeable mentor can also make a tremendous difference. A good mentor can help you understand grooming, conditioning, presentation, ring etiquette, and the many details that come with exhibiting dogs.

A true show prospect is not determined by labeling, but by careful evaluation, pedigree, and intentional breeding.
At Signature Miniature Dachshunds, our program is developed with the AKC breed standard as the foundation. Each breeding is thoughtfully planned with an emphasis on structure, movement, and temperament—qualities essential for success in both conformation and performance events.
We offer a limited number of show prospect puppies to select homes. This includes individuals who are already active in the sport, as well as those who are interested in beginning their journey in AKC events, including conformation, rally, obedience, and other performance venues. Junior handlers are also welcomed.
Each potential show prospect is evaluated individually for overall balance, structural correctness, movement, pedigree consistency, and temperament. Not every puppy is suitable for show placement, and availability is limited.
For those new to showing, guidance is available throughout the process. We are committed to helping our clients understand what defines a quality prospect and how to approach the sport with a solid foundation.
All puppies placed with full (open) AKC registration are sold on a co-ownership agreement. Co-ownership remains in place until the dog earns an AKC title in conformation or a recognized performance event. Upon completion of a title, full ownership is transferred.
Placement of show prospects is selective and based on the best interest of both the dog and the program. We prioritize homes that are committed to developing the dog’s potential and participating in the sport with intention.
